How Area Units Are Structured
Area is a two-dimensional measurement, so every area unit is derived by squaring a length unit. One square meter (m²) is the area of a 1 m × 1 m square. One square kilometer (km²) is a 1,000 m × 1,000 m square. which is 1,000,000 m², not 1,000 m². This squared relationship means conversions between area units involve squared conversion factors: since 1 foot = 0.3048 m, one square foot = 0.3048² = 0.0929 m².

When You Need Area Conversion
Real estate listings in the US use acres for land and square feet for interior space. Listings in most other countries use square meters or hectares for land and square meters for interior space. When comparing international property listings, converting floor area from m² to sq ft (multiply by 10.764) is the single most useful operation.
Agriculture uses hectares in most countries and acres in the US. One hectare is slightly less than 2.5 acres, so a 100-hectare farm is about 247 acres. For large geographic areas. countries, states, national parks. square kilometers or square miles are standard, depending on the country.
In home improvement, flooring and tiling materials are sold by the square foot in the US and by the square meter elsewhere. Always add 10–15% to your area measurement to account for waste and cuts when ordering materials.
