How Length Units Relate

The metric system defines the meter as the SI base unit of length. All other metric units are decimal multiples: a kilometer is exactly 1,000 meters, a centimeter is 1/100 of a meter, and a millimeter is 1/1,000 of a meter. The meter itself is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. a fixed physical constant that makes the definition permanent and reproducible anywhere.

Imperial and US customary units use a different chain: 12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard, and 1,760 yards = 1 mile. The inch is legally defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters, which anchors the entire Imperial system to the metric meter.

• 1 yard = 0.9144 meters

Example: a 5K race is exactly 5 kilometers, which is 5 × 0.62137 = 3.107 miles, often rounded to 3.1 miles in race descriptions.

When You Need Length Conversion

Length conversion comes up constantly in travel (road distances switch between km and miles depending on country), construction (lumber dimensions in feet vs. metric plans), online shopping (clothing sizes that list chest measurements in inches but you only know your cm), and science homework (converting lab measurements to SI for submission).

Nautical miles matter for pilots and sailors: airways, shipping lanes, and METAR weather reports all use nautical miles and knots. One nautical mile equals one arc-minute of latitude, which is why it became the standard for navigation. it ties distance directly to the geometry of the Earth.
