How Speed Units Are Defined
Speed is distance divided by time, so every speed unit is built from a length unit and a time unit. The SI unit is meters per second (m/s). Miles per hour (mph) and kilometers per hour (km/h) are the most common everyday units. mph dominates in the US and UK, while km/h is standard in most other countries and on international road signs.
The knot is a unit used exclusively in aviation and maritime navigation. One knot equals one nautical mile per hour, which equals 1.852 km/h or approximately 1.151 mph. It is the standard for aircraft airspeed, ship speed, wind speed in aviation weather reports (METARs), and ocean current data.

Example: a commercial jet cruises at roughly 900 km/h. That is 900 ÷ 1.852 ≈ 486 knots, 900 × 0.621 ≈ 559 mph, or about Mach 0.85 at cruise altitude (where the speed of sound is lower than at sea level).
Mach Number and Why It Changes
Mach 1 is not a fixed speed. it is the local speed of sound, which depends on air temperature (and therefore altitude). At sea level on a standard day (15 °C), Mach 1 is 340.3 m/s (1,225 km/h / 761 mph). At 35,000 ft cruise altitude, the air is around −57 °C and Mach 1 drops to about 295 m/s (1,062 km/h / 660 mph). This is why this converter uses the sea-level standard value for Mach. for precise aeronautical calculations you would need the actual outside air temperature.
